Perserving Tradition
Morgan Platt
Morgan Platt was born November 22, 1906 in Holly Hill, SC. He was the son of John Platt and Adeline Muckenfuss. He grew up on a farm and later married Rhode E. Dangerfield of Moncks Corner, SC. He was the father of seven children.
Morgan was a great spiritual leader, hunter, fisherman, storyteller, inventor and educator. His whistle could be heard everywhere he went. He would always say “Whistling keeps your mind clear, no time to let the devil in”.
He never met a stranger that he wouldn’t help, everyone was his brother.
He loved gathering at the Santee River with the tribe, no matter what season or time of year. He loved to celebrate with family and friends. Going to worship service was required from everyone.
Before his passing on May 08, 1997, he lived to celebrate the births of twenty seven grandchildren, forty five great grandchildren and fourteen great, great grandchildren. He left us all with inspiring truths, storytelling, laughter and tears. He is sadly missed but his contribution to life lives in all of us.
Allen Platt
Allen Platt (George) was born December 25, 1907 in Holly Hill, SC. He was the son of John Platt and Adeline Muckenfuss. He grew up a farm and later married Laura Dangerfield of Moncks Corner, SC. He was the father of nine children and a niece. He moved to Orange county Florida in 1954 in hopes of his children receiving a better education.
He fought the supreme court of Florida in 1954-55 to allow American Indians to go to school with whites for a better education. His actions created the way for our children to have a better future.
He had a joke for everyone and like his brother he loved family and friends. Being outdoors telling, hunting, fishing, spending time together, going to worship service and joking with his family was all he ever wanted to do.
His passing has left a legacy for our future generations to celebrate his life for years to come.
The Foundation
The Morgan Allen Platt Foundation is a non-profit 501(C)3 organization, established in 2006, whose mission is to research, educate, archive artifacts and historical documents in order to honor the historical and contemporary contributions of American Indians in South Carolina.
The foundation was created in honor of two brothers who inspired their families and community with Spiritual Culture and Education for the survival of American Indian tribes and their future as native people. They were honored and respected as elders of the Santee Indian Tribe and their families. They taught the tribe to use their minds and their faith, instead of a stick to solve issues. An education would help the tribe’s future for survival and one day is able to truly celebrate “Thanksgiving” again.
Goals
The foundations’ goals are to have an educational expo every year in South Carolina, to educate the public of American Indian Culture, locations and our presence in South Carolina today and also establish a relationship with schools and institutions for furthering research to help achieve greater awareness of our contributions that help make the great state of South Carolina.
